Overview

The Public Interest Attorney Loan Repayment (PIALR) Program repays up to $11,000 in student loans for licensed attorneys who agree to practice in Public Interest Areas of the Law in California over four years. Payment on an eligible PIALR award is not guaranteed. Funding is limited. Payments will be made to awarded Program participants on an annual basis.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the PIALR Program, applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Submit a PIALR Application by August 9, 2024,
  • Be a California State Bar licensed attorney, and
  • Practice (or agree to practice) in Public Interest Areas of the Law in California for four years.

Public Interest Areas of the Law 

Public Interest Areas of the Law means the following areas of the law that serve the public interest:

  • Legal Services Organization (a legal services provider in California that serves a clientele over 70 percent of whom are low-income persons according to applicable federal income guidelines
  • Prosecuting Attorney’s Office
  • Child Support Agency Office
  • Criminal Public Defender’s Office 
  • Qualified Support Center (as defined in BPC § 6213)

How to Apply 

STEP 1: Submit a Public Interest Attorney Loan Repayment Program Application to PIALR@csac.ca.gov by August 9, 2024.
STEP 2: If selected for further verification, promptly submit verification documents. 

Awardees will begin to be notified August 30, 2024.

Next Steps

After an applicant submits an application, the applicant will receive a confirmation email that their application has been received. The Commission will review the PIALR Application and select potential awardees for verification. 

If selected for verification, the information applicants may be asked to provide additional documents including, but not limited to:

  • Pay stubs,
  • Bank account statements,
  • Tax information, or
  • Debt statements.

Application Scoring Matrix

The PIALR Scoring Matrix will be used to select participants from the pool of qualified applicants. For more information, please refer to the California Code of Regulations, Chapter 1, Article 19.
